Can tooth whitening gel infect gums?

I got my braces off recently, *thank god* and i used this tooth whitening gel the orthodontist gave me. I brushed my teeth before and my gums got a little bloody. I decided to use teh stuff anyway and did. It burned my gums and when i took it out my gums are all red, swollen and sensitive... Could this be an infection? or is it just the tooth whitening agrivated my gums? I used Opalescence PF.

You might have an underlying infection that the whitening aggravated. Start flossing once a day and using a mouthwash like Listerine. You might also want to lay off the whiteners until you get your gum problems under control.
