Do whitening strips really work?

I want to whiten my teeth, but I don't want to spend a fortune getting it done at the dentist's. Do whitening strips actually work? What about other teeth whitening products like toothpaste? Which whitening product would you recommend using and why?
--------------------
No, whiteners in toothpaste, mouth rinses and floss don't work well. Most of this is pure marketing. The color of tartar is a white-ish yellow and just the mechanical action of brushing your teeth will remove this discoloring. Floss will remove the yellow-ish color in between your teeth. This is why these companies can get away with advertising them as whiteners. In fact, if you look at the ingredients of any of these products, you will see there is no active whitening ingredients in them. As far as white strips go, they may get your teeth a shade or two lighter, but don't expect great results from them. There is a compliance issue here too. You have to wear a lot of them to get that shade or two lighter. Like all whitening systems, you will have a rebound effect also. You will not achieve Hollywood white teeth. This is done through cosmetics and in office bleaching. The best bang for you buck with the best results would be the take home bleach trays made in your dental office. It's worth mentioning, If you have porcelain or composites on your front teeth, these will not change color.
