Whitening Teeth?

my friend says mixing baking soda, peroxide (or somethigng), and water into a paste and brushing your teeth w/ it. Then you brush ur teeth regularly. Apparently the dentist does this. Does it make ur teeth more sensitive? thanks=]
--------------------
Sorry, hydrogen peroxide neither ruins teeth or makes them sensitive. It is used in many professional whitening products. I would not use it straight because of the taste, but it is not harmful. Whitening toothpastes can make some teeth sensitive, but it is not harmful to teeth, either. They only remove surface stain. Try whitening strips or see your dentist. We can give you a lot of advice about what to do and what not to do. White strips work for a lot of younger people that don't have a lot of staining. Good luck!

Could I invent a super hard covering for teeth?

Is it viable? Some sort of super hard but very thin clear layer that would prevent tooth decay, whitening etc. Impossible? Some reason it wouldn't work? Developing it now? Just haven't found the right ingredients? Thanks guys!
--------------------
It would be a great invention but I don't see it as a possibility. What ever material you use would have to adhere to the teeth in such a way so they are air and moisture proof and also could not have a margin for bacteria to gather at below the tissue where the covering and the natural tooth or root meet. It would need to be cemented to the teeth such as crowns are. Also, it would need to cover a few millimeters of the root under the tissue to protect this area from decay and do so without causing any irritation the tissue which might cause tissue recession. Maybe do some research into crowns; full porcelain, acrylic temporaries. Good luck, I hope you succeed with your invention since it would be a break through in dental care and the prevention of tooth decay and discoloration! Your invention might just put some dentist out of work!

Question for a dentist or dental technician - I had my teeth whitened at the dentist 18 months ago?

I am a smoker and although my teeth are actually quite white they are not as white as when i first had them done, i plan to give up smoking, would it be benificial to have the procedure redone? Or would an over the counter product work just as well as i have had it done before? Thanks
--------------------
Try using Crest White Strips. They are inexpensive and work well at removing superficial stain. As long as you are still smoking, having the bleaching redone in the dental office is going to get costly. You will probably find the White Strips to work quite well at maintaining the degree of whiteness you currently have. I hope this helps.

What is the best whitening toothpaste?

I whiten my teeth but i want better results. I have sensitive teeth so I use Crest Gentle Routine strips. What is a good whitening toothpaste that wont irritate my sensitive teeth?
--------------------
I alternate between the Sensodyne whitening and the Arm and Hammer whitening. That works if you have sensitive teeth.

What are some safe, alternative ways to whiten your teeth?

I don't smoke, I don't drink too much coffee, tea, or sodas. I'm in my mid 40's so I'm looking for fast, effective, safe alternatives.
--------------------
i've heard that crest whitening strips work well. or get it done professionally - even though it's expensive, it's the safest way to do it properly.

Home remedy to whiten teeth?

My teeth are a little yellow and I have braces so it looks even worse. Because of braces I can't use the whitening strips and my parents disagree on getting teeth whitened proffesionally. If there's a cheap home remedy that I can use to whiten my teeth plz tell me! I heard about mixing baking soda with another thing called hydrogen something... We don't have it and no one wants me to buy it because it has short shelf life. Thanks!
--------------------
You're probably not going to like my answer, but here it goes: You don't want to whiten your teeth now. When you get your braces off, god forbid, what's underneath the brackets could wind up being yellower than what's around it ( or vice versa). I had braces too and had the same problem. The best thing to do is try your best to brush between the brackets and under the wires. It should help whiten the areas around the brackets. When they polish off the orthodontic glue, that too should help with the whitening. After you get your braces off you'll be able to whiten. By the way, using baking soda mixed with hydrogen peroxide isn't a good idea. It can dissolve the orthodontic glue.

What toothpaste is the best for whitening?!?!?

to me, i have really nasty yellow teeth. i dont know if its just because im self conscious about it but, ive been using colgate..the orange kind of toothpaste and its not doing anything to whiten my teeth. please help me out! i hate smiling in pics because of my teeth being so nasty! anything will help! THANKS!
--------------------
brush with baking soda or peroxide (be careful not to swallow either of them.) For me, first I brush with my regular toothpaste. Then I put about about a teaspoon of baking soda in a dish and mix it with a few drops of water until it's kind of a paste. Then I brush it very thoroughly on my teeth with my regular toothbrush. You can also dip your toothbrush in peroxide and brush with that. Be sure to rinse thoroughly after either method. In my opinion, these are the most effective ways to whiten teeth, and the least expensive.

i heard somewhere that hydrogen peroxide can whiten your teeth?

does it work? and does it have any risk factors? does it kill your enamel and is it safe for your teeth?
--------------------
Yes it can, in fact, right on the bottle it probably says something about using it as a dental rinse. Be aware that with some people using the peroxide makes your teeth SUPER sensitive so you have to decide if the whiter is worth it, just follow the directions on the bottle. Good luck

Whats the best way to whiten teeth?

Without going to the doctor, and is not TOO expensive? Just a quick fix?
--------------------
Take soem baking soda, and lemon juice (don't make it watery more paste like) and brush your teeth for about 4-5 minutes. It tastes awful, but it really makes an immediate difference.

question about BRUSHING//WHITENING teeth? please answer :)

ok, lets say that every day for pretty much your whole life you've brushed your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. now lets say that you brush your teeth for ten minutes twice a day. how long will it take for you to see a difference? --this is totally random, its not like i'm going to start brushing my teeth ten minutes twice a day or anything (this question doesnt even relate to me a little bit) i'm just curious....
--------------------
You will see your teeth sensitive. Brushing is hard on your teeth, it removes tooth enamel. Use something like crest whitening - night time. It works very well, in conjunction with armon hamor baking soda teeth whitening stuff (not sure of the name, but its pretty much just that).

I need white teeth and good breath! I'm poor so I can't afford those laser whiteners. Anyone know a good toothpaste and toothbrush I can buy?
--------------------
Beverly Hills range is very good, Good breathe comes from a good diet, or just carry some mints around with you, just in case

how to whiten teeth with household products?

how do i whiten teeth at home using products i already have? i heard baking soda works but it did not work well.
--------------------
Use 2 parts water to 1 part hydrogen peroxide. Just swish it around in your mouth for about 60 seconds, and spit it out. Try not to swallow any (though if you did it would not kill you). Do this once a day after you brush and you should see a difference in about a week or less. Then just repeat as needed.

Is it bad to whiten your teeth?

I just got my braces off a few weeks ago and I noticed that my teeth are not as white as I would like them to be, they are like yellowish, and that's gross. So I was wondering, I am only 14, Can I whiten my teeth? and is it bad? what whitening thing should I use?
--------------------
No its not bad, as long as you don't do it often. Crest white strips work very well, I've never tried them myself, but I heard good things about them. But its recommended you go to the dentist and get them whitened there.

How can I whiten my teeth whithought using expensive products?

I want to whiten my teeth but I don't want to spend lots of money on products. Is there anything I could do?
--------------------
I literally whitened my teeth in less than a week, and this is what I did. I used Crest Pro-health whitening toothpaste and an oral-b spin brush and I followed it with Scope White mouthwash (followed by Act mouthwash, but this probably does not contribute to the whitening). I did this twice a day for like 3 or 4 days and my teeth went from yellow and gross to pretty and white, no kidding. It really really surprised me. It's not expensive like white strips and stuff like that, but it costs more than regular toothpaste/mouthwash.

how can i whiten my teeth?

whats some home remedies for teeth whitening i dont want to buy the stripes or get it professionally done please help
--------------------
My dad is dentist ive asked him about whitening teeth before. All products such as toothpastes, mouthwashes, and baking soda solutions that claim to whiten teeth do not work. The problem is that the solution will not be on your teeth long enough to have any affect. Unfortunately, he says the only ways are the strips or by the dentist. The strips are expensive, about 40 bucks a box last time i saw them in walgreens. Going to the dentist is definately the best way. You can get them bleached which only takes a little while, or you can have trays made. My dad made me the trays because it is not as hard on your teeth. You simply have to get an impression made of your teeth. A dentist can then make trays and will give you solution. You put in the trays with the gel solution for about an hour every day. I did this for two months and my teeth got so much whiter. Unfortunately, these might be your only options. I know you dont want to get the strips or go to a professional, but i would really recommend it if you could. I can personally say that the trays are really effective and easy. Also, if you go to a dentist, they will give you all the information so it is as safe as possible. They will tell you exactly how long you can use the trays, what foods to avoid, and what to look out for to make sure your teeth and gums do not get hurt. Hopefully this helped. I wish i could give you another option on how to whiten your teeth, but there is really no other alternative if you seriously want results and the other products will be a waste of your money.

how do you whiten your child's teeth with out taking them to the dentist?

Well if there's like a say ten year old kid who has yellow teeth how would you whiten them without using whitening strips or going to the dentist?
--------------------
It is perfectly normal for a 10 year old's teeth to be on the yellow side, especially if he/she still has baby teeth next to the adult teeth, as this makes them look even darker. They will whiten with age. It is highly inadvisable to try to whiten the teeth of a child due to the fact that the pulp chambers in the teeth are larger and he/she will suffer pain and sensitivity. Whitening toothpastes and baking soda would be too harsh for a 10 year old child, so please do not try them. Once the child reaches the age of 16 or 17, then you may try a bleaching method, but please let your child develop at his/her own rate first. I honestly do not believe that any dental professional would recommend any type of whitener for a 10 year old child. EDIT: and especially do not use peroxide on or in a child's mouth.

Does bi-carb soda and toothpaste really whiten teeth?

I have yellow teeth and I've heard that bicarb soda and toothpaste will help whiten my teeth... Will this actually work and will they stay white for ever or only a short period of time? And how many times should you brush your teeth with it?
--------------------
You first need to get to understand as to what is it in the toothpaste that helps in whitening the teeth. Toothpastes mainly consists of 2 ingredients --- a whitening agent like carbamide peroxide or sodium tripolyphospate and an abrasive agent like silica (or calcium carbonate or dicalcium phosphate). Whitening agents do not actually have much effect on teeth whitening since the contact time with the teeth is very less. Abrasives is what actually that helps in removing the stains on the teeth and whitenign toothpastes have more of the abrasives as their content as compared to the ordinary toothpastes. But usage beyond limits can cause damage to the enamel since the silica like abrasies can actually keep peeling off the enamel even while removing the stains from the teeth. Long term usage of these toothpastes could weaken the enamel quite beyond acceptable limits which could lead to related complications.

How do you whiten your teeth at home?

I need different ideas. I already use baking soda but I don't see the change. help.
--------------------
What you can do is go to your dentist and get a custom made bleaching tray it's better than the ones already in stores because this one will fit perfect in your mouth and whiten all teeth. The dentist will give you bleach with it and after you've used up all the bleach he gives you, you can always go to walmart, cvs, Walgreen's and get bleach.
