Have you any experience of tooth whitening either through a dentist or an at home kit?
I was thinking about getting my teeth whitened recently. They aren't in a bad way but 30 years of tea, coffee and red wine have left them a little off colour. Has anyone else out there had there teeth whitened? How much did it cost and was it worth it? Have you tried one of the home kits? I tried one years ago but you had to use it at least twice a day for a month and I just didn't have the patience. Finally, do you know if the procedure is still possible with a crown? Any help appreciated.
--------------------
I am a dental nurse and have also had the experience of tooth whitening. I had it done as a home kit given to me by my dentist. the ones you buy from chemists dont tend to work as the percentage of dental bleech used in them is not high enough. Bleaching is a private treatment as the NHS wont fund asthetic treatments so it could cost from £300 onwards. It is very good. The procedure will work but because crowns are made of porcelain, they wont change colour. You would have to get the crown changed after to be the same shade as your whitened teeth. White composite filling wont change colour either

WHITENING TEETH - what should i use?
im trying to whiten my teeth, i smoke socailly, so its not like a pack a day or any of that...if anything a pack a week MAYBE and its not every week...ive done SOME research and found crest whitening strips will help whiten your teeth a lot, but im worried that my teeth will become weak and lose a lot of its enamle which i understand thats what happens...i found that if i buy arm and hammer age defying toothpaste that will naturally build my enamle back so my teeth stay strong and the white strips keep them white...is this true or does anyone have any advice that has helped them!?
--------------------
You are right. That toothpaste works because it contains baking soda, which is a mild abrasive that literally scrapes the stains off. It also can raise your blood pressure because it contains a lot of salt. Try Crest White Strips.

Is it OK to use baking soda to whiten your teeth when you have braces?
I heard that you can use baking soda to whiten your teeth. I was going to try it, but I have braces right now. I know your not supposed to use most bleach/whitening treatments while you have braces, so should I wait until I get my braces off before I try it?
--------------------
I wouldnt try any extreme bleachig methods (such as baking soda) without the supervision of your ortho....and if you ignore your ortho...i wouldnt try anything still because it could actually remove the enamel in the places that are not underneath the bracket...so when you get the bracket off you are left with a big, obvious stained square in the middle of your teeth - not pretty

Polanight teeth whitening help needed please!?
I've been given Polanight 16% by my dentist who told me to use it overnight for 14 days. I have used it 6 times now and my teeth are now so sensitive I'm not sure whether to keep doing it. Also, only the bottom half of my teeth have changed colour, is this normal, will the whole of the tooth gradually change? Not sure if I'm using too much or too little gel, dentist was a bit vague! Any help or advice would be appreciated....

Whitening teeth?
What's the new whitening product out? I saw it in a magazine comparing to Crest White Strips, but I forgot the name. It advertises as not being "strips" and sliding all over your teeth, which I've found Crest to be. It's a plastic white thing that you cup over your whole teeth at once... like made from Rambrant or something.

I don't know of the product that you are referring to but I do know that if you use teeth whiteners they make your gums recede and once they are gone there is no getting them back, so i would suggest not using them.

teeth whitening while pregnant?
Do you think it is okay to use crest white strips while pregnant? I looked at the warning label, and it didn't say anything, but i've been using them for a few days now, and was just wondering if you think that its okay?
--------------------
There has not been sufficient testing done on the effects of using a whitening gel while pregnant. Until such studies have been done on a large scale, it might be best to err on the side of caution. Manufacturers of teeth whitening products and teeth bleaching products generally recommend against using them during pregnancy for liability reasons. There are some newer technologies that use lasers to whiten teeth, and these may be safer than a chemical gel. You should consult both your physician and your dentist before having any such procedure if you are pregnant. There are several issues to be aware of regarding oral hygiene and pregnancy. while you are pregnant your body experiences many hormonal fluctuations. The changing levels of hormones in your body can affect your oral health as well as many other areas of health. Specifically, these changing hormones make your gums more sensitive to plaque. If you become pregnant while you already have gum disease, pregnancy can intensify it. While you are pregnant, it is especially important to practice good oral hygiene. Increased blood flow through the body will often make the gums swell. This also increases your vulnerability to gum disease. Additionally, during pregnancy most pregnant women have some bleeding of their gums, particularly while brushing or flossing. You may also notice that your mouth produces more saliva during pregnancy. When you visit your dentist you should inform her if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Dental x-rays may not be safe during pregnancy, and knowing you are trying to become pregnant can help in planning x-ray treatments. There are several steps you should follow while you are pregnant to insure good oral hygiene. Brush thoroughly at least twice a day, preferably in the morning and before bed. If possible, brush after every meal for at least five minutes at a time. If you vomit, you should brush afterwords to clean your teeth and mouth. Use a good quality, soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste containing fluoride. If you have a lot of sensitivity, try using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. If you experience pain after brushing, use ice to sooth the pain and reduce swelling. You should schedule a dental appointment immediately if: Your gums bleed a lot or are painful, you experience breath that doesn't go away, you lose a tooth or have pain in a tooth, or if you have a lump or growth in your mouth. Decaying teeth and gum disease can lead to an infection which may complicate pregnancy. Oh yeah, and congratulations =)

Teeth whitening at home?
I get my braces off on wednesday (soo excited!) and im getting them bleached from the dentist but not until friday. I know people will ask me to see my teeth when i get them off wednesday and thursday night, and i want them whiter right when people see me. so is there any at home things i can do to make them whiter within hours? i know crest white strips work over time but if i kept them in longer would that work? or any trays?
--------------------
i know theres things at stores you can buy that you would like wear for 2 hours and they might make them a little whiter. also anything with baking soda i know makes them whiter but not right away but once you get your braces off they'll probably be pretty white cause the ortho polishes them and does all this other stuff to them.

Whats the best way to naturally whiten your teeth?
I'm not talking about hollywood type white teeth which you could spot from a mile away. But just generally white teeth. Whats the best way to naturally do it? I don't want to get any professional treatments, just want to know if there are any fruits I should eat (I've heard apples are good to whiten teeth) and how much I should brush my teeth, stuff like that.

Do whitening toothpastes damage your teeth?
I mean the normal ones like Colgate and Macleans.
--------------------
Those brands should not cause damage if used in accordance to the instructions. http://www.colgate.co.uk/app/ColgateTota http://www.macleans.co.uk/products.aspx# What about whitening toothpastes? There are several whitening toothpastes on the market. Although they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth, they may be effective at removing staining and therefore may improve the overall appearance of your teeth. Whitening toothpaste may also help the effect last, once your teeth have been professionally whitened. We recommend that you look for our accreditation symbol on the packaging of oral care products. This is a guarantee that the claims made about the product have been scientifically and clinically checked by an independent panel of experts.

I am interested to whiten teeth at home because they are a bit off white well a bit more off white. I am interested in getting the whites that celebrities have. That would be wonderful. Thanks.

Lemon juice, baking soda or baking powder can also be used for teeth whitening. Strawberries are natural teeth whiteners, simply rub them directly on your teeth or mash into a paste and apply. Apple cider vinegar can also be used for teeth whitening. More remedies and information regarding your teeth at http://sites.google.com/site/dentalinfos

Is there anyway to whiten your teeth (more than whitestrips do) without going to a Dentist?
I use Crest Whitestrips 2x a day and my teeth are OK white, but I want to try to get them a little whiter. Is there anything out there that anyone has used that works to whiten teeth more than the whitestrips (or along with)? I don't really want to get them done professionally. I've heard of mouth washes and gels and stuff but I don't know anyone who has ever used them. Thanks!

Use the whitestrip supreme or premiums. You want to find a carbamide peroxide concentration of 10% or better, or it won't work very well. I'm assuming your teeth are straight, or the strip won't form to the teeth as well. Gels work the best, but you need a custom-fitted tray from your dentist ($50-$75). This will keep the gel off of your gums and free of big-time irritation, but again, the gel needs to be 10% or better. You need ~45-60 min on the teeth before the peroxide is done. Hydrogen peroxide WILL NOT lighten your teeth, it's too weak, so skip mouth washes and dissolving strips.

I live in Canada and had great success with the offbrand whitening strips, (the wax strip type) and they cost half of what the name brand (crest, colgate etc) cost. Also try chewing Trident "White" (gum w/ baking soda) if available in the UK, tastes great and is good for about 2 - 3 shades of white. http://www.dentist.net/trident.asp example at bottom of page Good Luck!
