Stained Teeth 7 Bright Ideas Think of a fine porcelain cup. Fill it daily with coffee and colas, subject it to heat and cold, smoke, and alcohol. Fill it with brightly colored food. Then wash the cup in a harsh detergent. Eventually, tiny craze marks will dot the ceramic surface, and before you know it, the once-white cup looks dirty and dingy. Your teeth are like that pretty porcelain cup. They start out shiny and white. But cola, tea, smoke, acidic juices, and highly pigmented foods slosh past them three (or more) times daily. And your teeth tell the tale in the form of stains. Not that teeth were ever meant to be totally white. The natural color of teeth is actually light yellow to light yellow-red, says Roger P. Levin, D.D.S., president of the Baltimore Academy of General Dentistry. But as you age, your teeth tend to darken even more. Surface enamel cracks and erodes, exposing dentin, the less dense inside of the tooth, which absorbs food color. Stains also latch onto the plaque and tartar buildup on teeth, finding anchorage among the nooks and crannies. "There are many different kinds of stains," says Ronald I. Maitland, D.M.D., who specializes in cosmetic dentistry in his New York City practice. Stains can be caused by antibiotics, by quirks in individual metabolism, and sometimes by high fever. All these have to be fixed by a professional. But common stainsthe coffee and cigarette varietycan be washed away between professional cleanings. Here's how. Clean after every meal. If you clean your teeth regularly and conscientiously, you have less chance of keeping stains on your teeth, says Dr. Levin. Polish with baking soda. Mix baking soda with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a toothpaste-like consistency, says Dr. Levin, then brush stains away. Be sure not to use too much peroxide, as it can cause burning. Check your plaque quotient. Rinse with a disclosing solution to show where plaque remains on your teeth after brushing. Those spots are where your teeth will stain if you don't improve your brushing technique, says John D. B. Featherstone, Ph.D., chairman of the Department of Oral Biology at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York. Rinse, rinse, rinse. After every meal, rinse the food from your teeth, says Dr. Maitland. If you can't get to a restroom, pick up your water glass, take a swig, then rinse and swallow at the table. Electrify your smile. An electric toothbrush, says Dr. Maitland, will push more of the stain-collecting plaque off your teeth. Studies show an electric toothbrush can remove 98.2 percent of plaque. Try a plaque dissolver. Mouthwashes that have an antibacterial action will reduce stain-catching plaque, says Dr. Featherstone. Don't scrub away your smile. If you're tempted to turn to one of those super-whitening tooth polishes, don't, says Dr. Maitland. "It's a quick fix, but it's like using an abrasive on a countertop. It takes off the stain, but it wears off the enamel, too. And as your enamel gets thinner and thinner, more of the dentin shows through. And dentin is darker, so it looks like your tooth is stained." Watch out for excessive scrubbing, too. Harder doesn't mean better, Dr. Maitland warns. A heavy-duty brush with a lot of muscle behind it can be as wearing on tooth enamel as an abrasive toothpaste.

how can you whiten your teeth at home?
ive tried baking soda and it only whitens the bottoms of my teeth. anything you know of that can whiten the whole tooth fast? lol
--------------------
you should try crest whitening strips. but the only problem is that the whiting does not stay on your teeth for 12 months sadly. However you should consider dentist home trays. You sleep on a set of modeled teeth trays.

Is there any true method or way to whiten the yellowish teeth?
Should I go to a dentist or just brush up regularly or is there any third option or remedy
--------------------
Baking soda will remove stains on your teeth, which isn't the same as whitening them. If your teeth aren't white underneath those surface stains, then they won't be white afterwards either. Just slightly wet your toothbrush and dip it the baking soda, then brush normally.

The best way to whiten teeth
I just had my teeth cleaned yesterday, it was 4 years since my last cleaning so yeah, it was a little bloody and a little painful but no cavities. So this leaves me thinking, with the very healthy teeth I have why not make them whiter? SO, I was looking at mouthwash, whitening strips, and that ionic white I had seen on tv a while back. Anyone have experience with any of them? How well dose any of this stuff work? Thanks!

Is teeth bleaching covered under insurance?
I mean like if your dentist whitens your teeth do you have to pay for that or is free like the rest of dental work?
--------------------
It falls under the cosmetic category for most insurances, so percentage wise your insurance probably covers less on whitening than on other procedures. I know thats not the happiest answer, but check with your insurance. Who knows, they may be different than most. if your insurance does not cover anything on whitening. get a dental discount plan. they are cheap, and you can keep your current insurance.

teeth whiten?
okay i want to whiten my teeth, and ive tried the whitening strips made by target, it looks like a blue mouth gaurd when i used it, it was working but i realized once my teeth was whitening i saw a crack on my front tooth im thinking about getting it professionally whitened but will the crack show you think? im guessing if it gets bright enough it will not show also when i used it these white spots showed on my teeth but i think its because the idiot ortadontist didnt scrape the white glue off my teeth, so all i might need to do is get those sanded off also, even with my retainer i have a small gap in between my second and third tooth at the top (so its on the side) and it really bugs me, can i get it professionally filled it to look normal or atleast have a mini braces to put that tooth in place?
--------------------
you can have whitening done and the crack in your tooth is most likly a stress fracture it is very common it might now show so much when you have zoom done that is a reaslly good procedure to lift about 5 true shade levels. go to your ortho about your gap situation you might only need a diffrent retainer

How old should you be to get your teeth whitened?
Not by surgery, but by bleeching
--------------------
You should be in your later teens (high school) as you should have all of your permanent teeth when you whiten. If you are young the whitening products can tend to cause a lot of sensitivity. If you have braces it will also not work well. First thing you need to do is have a thorough dental cleaning and see how they look after that since buildup (plaque, tartar and stain) will be removed at that time. Then if whitening is an option, use a mild treatment like Crest Whitestrips. Your baby teeth were probably much whiter and that is very normal. Hope that helps! JAMRDH - a dental hygienist

how to not only just whiten your teeth but to whiten them like opaque white? chalk white?
i have been using crest white strips and i see them brightening my smile, but it seems like they are leaving my teeth translucent. just a bit. so, what is out there that celberties are using which leaves there teeth not just white, but also like white like a chalk. how are randy jackson teeth so white?
--------------------
Teeth are naturally translucent. The only way to get your teeth whiter is to get them professionally whitened at the dental office. Most celebrities get porcelain veneers/crowns to achieve the "perfect smile." If you decide to go that route, it's best to choose a dentist who is an accredited member (not just member) of the AACD (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists). They have to taken a written and clinical exam to get this membership. Do your research because some dentists are not experienced with cosmetic/esthetic dentistry. You want to get the best out of the money you invest into your dental health, so don't just pick out of a phone book. Check for AACD membership, check the DDS website, look for before/after pictures, and patient reviews. Good luck!

Is it true that baking soda whitens your teeth?
If so, how do you use it? Many thanks.
--------------------
Baking soda will remove stains on your teeth, which isn't the same as whitening them. If your teeth aren't white underneath those surface stains, then they won't be white afterwards either. Just slightly wet your toothbrush and dip it the baking soda, then brush normally.

Hi, Lot of people do face problems with yellow teeth. The reason for yellow teeth can be less calcium, smoking or coffee. Some people face problems like yellow to faint yellow teeth also because of too much brushing or using products which harm teeth. While baking soda or peroxide can make your teeth white but it is not recommended. Dentists world over do not recommend use of such pure form substances on teeth as they harm your teeth in longer run. Not all whitening trays are good, in fact many people have complained about irritation and pain with trays. Yellow teeth are not always unhealthy while bright white teeth can be unhealthy. Lot of people want white teeth so that they can smile big and don't get embarrassed while talking to friends and colleagues. Such people can use teeth whitening pens which are 100% safe for your teeth. The best thing about these products is that you can easily get FREE trial to have white teeth. You may order your free trials and have white teeth. You just have to pay for the shipping and handling. Its always better to try before you buy and I am sure it will work for everyone including you. BTW the website where you can get such free samples is http://tinyurl.com/freewhiteteeth I am not promoting the website nor am I associated with it in any manner. Just trying to help someone who is worried about bad/yellow teeth. Hope this helps. Thanx :-)

I cannot take this any longer, I want to be able to smile. The spots run deep into my teeth,so I'm not sure I can get rid of them, but I know I can cover them somehow. Please help me... please.

oh im sorry that must be awful feeling like that and not being able to smile , ask your dentist to whiten / bleach your teeth, i wouldnt bother with the ones you do at home they never work. he will charge you , i dont know where your from but where im from its around £300 expensive but well worth it if you feel so self conceous about your teeth. all he will do is take a mould of your teeth by having you bite this stuff , sorry dont know wat its called lol he will ask you to go back and pick up the mould of your mouth and give you some bleach , and every night you squirt the bleach into the mouth mould and put it on your teeth i think it takes around a week to go white , but it does make a big difference :)

How can i whiten my teeth?
My teeth are yellow and i need them to be white. How can I do this?
--------------------
HI, I have always had problems with faint yellow teeth. In fact everyone in my family has this problem. I have tried every product that exists along with frequent visits to dentists. Dentists have always told me that my teeth are good but I was never happy with the color. Using peroxide or baking soda is harmful for teeth in a longer run so I never used it. Trays are always a NO for me because they give lot of irritation and pain. The ONLY thing that has worked for me till date is Dazzle White. I was not sure of using it at the beginning as I did not want to waste more money. Later, after doing some research on the Internet I found out about this company giving free samples. I immediately ordered mine (just paid $1.95 shipping). This is a real good product and has worked for me. I don't work for this company nor am I related to them in any manner. I need a good tooth whitening product!?
I had braces for 5 years, and during that time my ortho had me use fluoride twice a day. Now I find out that even though it made them otherwise healthy, fluoride actually darkens your teeth! Also, my teeth are very sensitive since the braces came off (even though that was over a year ago). I have had in-office bleaching done at my dentist, and it did lighten me a couple shades, but it hurt soooooooooooo bad for about 3 days afterward, like the air was too cold and it felt like my teeth were about to fall out. Same thing with white strips. So I'm going to have to go with something gentler in the future. I went through 5 years of braces, and it cost a lot of money and a lot of pain, and I want to be happy with my smile. Does anyone know of a whitening toothpaste or mouthwash that really works?
--------------------
I feel your pain. I tried the whitestrips, and they sent shooting pains into my teeth so bad that I had tears in my eyes! I have tried gels also, but those hurt too. I am a coffee drinker, and my teeth do have a tendency to get yellow, so I needed something that was powerful but gentle. I love Rembrandt's Dazzling White, it works great, and it's less than $15! Try it, I think you'll get hooked like me...
