Do teeth whitening strips actually work?

I currently am trying to find a least expensive way for whitening my teeth instead of the dentist doing it. What in those strips make them work?

It worked wonders for me, actually. I haven't used them for over 9 months and I still get compliments on how white my teeth are. I used the stuff that dissolves. :)
