Is it safe to use baking soda to whiten your teeth?

I want to know is it safe? Are there any pro-cautions when using baking soda and water to brush your teeth to whiten them? Is there a formula like how much water how much baking soda? Is there a steb-by-step? If so List them, tell me them. Thanks.Oh and can you use it to whiten your teeth when you have braces?
--------------------
teeth have two layers (Actually 3): enamel and dentin .. baking soda acts as an abrasive product, as you brush your teeth with it. Its like an exfoliation , enamel is a thin outer layer of the teeth , so i have tried it , it does work . BUT !! don't use it often because you can cause dental erosion , enamel is susceptible to damage and loss , and if you leave your dentin exposed you are going to develop sensitivity in your teeth to cold and hot .......
