Is a root canal the only way to whiten inside teeth?

My front teeth are kind of dark in a spot inside my teeth. I'm guessing its from my teeth getting hit because all of my other teeth are white. My dentist recommends a root canal but I have a fear of the dentist office. Is there a way to whiten inside theeth?
--------------------
The tooth has darkened because the tooth is dead/dying. It's very normal for this to happen to a front tooth. A root canal alone won't whiten it. After the root canal is done, a whitening agent can be placed inside the tooth, where the nerve used to be and this will whiten the tooth from the inside out. This is called internal bleaching and it's a very easy and usually inexpensive procedure to do. The downfall is that the whitening isn't permanent so you'll have to do it every so often. For a more lasting effect, you can have this tooth veneered or crowned. If you haven't had a lot of fillings done on this tooth, a veneer might be best but if it's had lots of work done, than a crown would be the way to go. I hope this answers your question a bit.
