Down sides of using baking soda to whiten teeth?

I have heard that using baking soda to whiten teeth... 1) can scratch off enamel after time 2) tastes terrible 3) can make teeth less immune to cavities I know 1 and 3 are similar/the same... I was just wondering if it went that far. I was really hoping a dentist could answer. Thanks
