Peroxide and baking soda for teeth whitening?

II have heard that to whiten your teeth you can dip your toothbrush in a bit of peroxide and then dip it into a bit of baking soda and brush with it. I've also read that peroxide can be pretty dangerous if you accidentally swallow it. So I'm confused, is this okay to do? And by peroxide, do they mean hydrogen peroxide, the stuff that comes in the brown bottle?

My dentist told me that you should never use baking soda that it actually damages the enamel. It may appear to whiten but it not in the long run. Use white strips. You can keep them white by swishing with peroxide but that just tastes nasty. The listerine pre-brush rinse tastes better in my opinion.
