Does teeth whitening products cause damage?

Has anyone experienced any negative dental effects from Over The Counter teeth whitening products? Such as toothpaste, strips, or gels?

My dentist warns against them. They work by dissolving the enamel which has yellowed with exposure to food, beverages, etc., exposing whiter enamel underneath. Used often, eventually the enamel remaining is thin and the teeth become sensitive to heat, cold, even touch. He mentioned he's treating one patient, a woman in her thirties, who is having trouble eating normally because of over-whitening. All her food has to be room temperature.
