Why does the teeth whitening stripes have time limits??? What happens if you leave them on too long???

Your teeth will become whiter because, I put on a whitening stripe that I was only suppose to leave on for 30-45 minutes and I had it on for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, my teeth got extremely white when I took it off... But I also think it depends on the company whitening stripes you are using.
