How to whiten super sensitive teeth?

I have really sensitive teeth. I tried Crest Advanced White Strips and after one use my teeth were incredibly sensitive and painful the next day. I also use the Sensodyne whitening toothpaste and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Does anyone have experience with store-bought or dentist office whitening that doesn't cause pain? I know there are tons of things out on the market and there has to be something that works without triggering sensitivity. Or at least a in-office procedure they can do to help. Note: i am NOT looking for home remedies!!

Unfortunately, most all of the whitening systems can cause temporary sensitivity. The "micro-structure" of dental enamel are tiny "rods". The whitening solutions allow these rods to open so the peroxide solution can penetrate into the tooth enamel to extract "color", thus whiten the teeth. Unfortunately, these rods opening also allows for the saliva, which is acidic, to penetrate as well, causing the sensitivity. The best solution is the have your dentist prescribe fluoride to apply following the whitening. Fluoride is very effective at reducing sensitivity. Good Luck
