Did it work and are they safe to use?

I did once. The problem is with the trays. They aren't custom fitted like the ones your dentist will make you. This allows for the bleach to spill out over your gums and/or not be on your teeth completely or evenly. I know they are a lot cheaper. Not sure what the percentage of bleach is in them either. The bleach I have from my dentist is 20%.
