Does baking soda really whiten teeth?

My friend told me that baking soda can whiten teeth... I just need a confirmation.

it doesnt make the teeth white-but does clean all the stains and yellowish plaque from the tooth surface.the teeth will look cleaner than before. the colour of the teeth itself will not change.
