Im 9 weeks pregnant and I wanted to get my teeth whitened at the dentist..is this safe or should I wait till after the baby is born?? Also is any other dentistry work harmful such as just getting my teeth cleaned? Thanks!!:)

When you're pregnant is actually recommended to get a dental check up and cleanings. The hormones in your body while pregnant can bleed, swell and trap food which can lead to gum disease and gingivitis. These can lead to preterm labor in some cases. I don't think whitening would be a good idea, it wouldn't be worth the risk to the baby to me, but check with your OB and dentist. Also, make sure your dentist is aware you're pregnant .. there are different types of medications they'll use for pain or for antibiotics if needed. They'll generally postpone any x-rays or anything like that if its necessary! I had to have an emergency crown done during my second pregnancy. We waited a few weeks until I was out of my first trimester and used a different type of pain killer, lidocaine is normally used but can cross into the placenta, I can't remember what my dentist used though. Good luck to you and congratulations!
