I've heard a lot of claims that those ones with U.V. lights work really well and also those with carbamide peroxide, but have also heard claims about it being unsafe at certain concentrations.

UV lights are no longer used because of its cancer inducing risk, the blue light that is currently used is purely in the visible light spectra and is harmless. Most whitening products have the same ingredients but in different concentrations. a detailed color analysis and surface analysis of your teeth needs be done including taking photos under magnification to look at surface texture before the dentist can decide which product will be appropriate for you. always go for the professional whitening as it is a more controlled process and will give you best results
