Does Colgate "Simply White" tooth whitening gel expire?

So... the other day I found this package of Colgate "Simply White" tooth whitening gel in the closet upstairs and I've been thinking of using it to whiten my teeth. It's never been opened, never been used, and has been sitting in the closet for a very very long time. I opened it tonight and saw inside the instruction booklet, it actually has some coupons that expired in 2004, so I'm imagining that the product itself is around 6-7 years old, lol. I'm basically just asking does this stuff ever expire?? I'm planning to call a pharmacy and ask about it, so as of now I'm not gonna use it juuuuuust yet, lol... Another concern of mine is that on the label it says it's supposed to be a "gel", but when I unscrewed the cap the product seems watery... not like a gel really. I'm kinda worried that might be a sign that it's too old to use or has expired somehow??

It likely won't do any harm to you but it probably has separated (therefore it's watery consistency). It probably would whiten your teeth still but may be to runny. If I were you I'd just toss it and by a new one.

I smoke and drink coffee almost everyday. My husband told me I should NOT whiten my teeth because I smoke and theres no sense. Is there a good product that lasts? Hi Renee, I am the one with the 10 year old son, the father issue. I don't want to go into too much detail. But, I lost your email address, if you could give it to me somehow....But, To answer your question, my son has the same problem, he doesn't have yellow teeth though, but he has buck teeth and he fell not too long ago and he had to have a route canal and get a fake tooth put back in. He has a little bit of coloration on it. I would ask the dentist or orthodontist about it. See what they say...good luck!

I had a jaw osteotomy last year and was told to use corsodyl, but not when to stop. That resulted in my teeth turning black (not all, all were stained though). Because of the osteotomy, I couldn't open my mouth properly so was unable to see the black. I was under the care of a lot of doctors and no one noticed it until I told them. It is now a year on and the very visible staining is still there, it has but a dampener on the 8 year brace treatment and operation. It feels like hard work for nothing. My ortho said today there is no amount of scale/polishing that could remove it. Is there anyone I can contact about this? Because my teeth are now stained due to the failings of the Dr's, Nurses and Dentists whose care I was under.

It might be an idea to go to a doctor and explain that the situation is leaving you very distressed and depressed. Explain that it's effecting your life, that you no longer want to go out and socialise as your extremely paranoid about people looking at your teeth. Also say that your worried about bad breath etc - IF you can convince a doctor that it's stressing you out to the point where you don't feel you can carry on with a "normal" life then they may help you. Good Luck Also - I can understand you feeling anger towards the Nurses, Dr's and dentists but they would have done the best they could IMO. I know it's easier to have someone to blame but it won't really get you anywhere. It's best to just try to move on and do the best you can to get the damage fixed.

Recently, due to stress at school, have occasionaly been missing opportunities to brush my teeth (would brush twice and floss twice daily). They have become so yellow I am almost disgusted. Now I went to buy teeth whiteners and I decided to get Aquafresh White Trays. First of all, they don't cover all my teeth so now if they work, half of my teeth will be white and the rest won't. Opalescence tooth whitening?

I got my tooth whitening trays and gel syringes of 20% Opalescence, however the whole office was in a meeting and no one really explained how to use them. I know to put a thin layer of gel in the tray but for how long? Do I brush before or after? Does the gel have to be kept at any temperature?

Brush before using without toothpaste (just a little water). You'll probably want to brush after to get everything off your teeth. Use the trays for 1 hour, once a day - leaving it on longer doesn't do any harm, but after an hour, it's not really active anymore. The gel can be kept at room temp (just be sure to avoid keeping it somewhere too warm). Another tip - I find that using the trays dehydrates my teeth, so immediately after taking the trays out the teeth look somewhat chalky and I can see little lines that I can't otherwise - this goes away about an hour after I'm done bleaching as saliva can reach the teeth again, but before I knew to expect it, it kind of freaked me out.

Teeth are not naturally as white as the advertising would have you believe. They are mostly bone white which is a an off color shade of white(slightly towards brown). Why some peoples teeth seem whiter than others may be more to do with the contrasting background (skin color being darker). Not saying your teeth are not porous. They will absorb stains such as tea, coffee, kool-aid and bleaching chemicals. So, if you abstain from the staining chemicals and have a healthy diet (low on sugar and decent amount of calcium it is about the best you can do for your teeth, besides regular brushing. They used to use baking soda and salt in the olden days instead of toothpaste and use that for cleaning. But it is a very slow process. Faster to get some teeth paint and paint them white.

It's a chemical burn. The whiteness should go away in a few hours. They may continue to be a little sore for the next couple days. I would avoid bleaching until your gums have healed. Next time you bleach, make sure you wipe off any excess that squishes out onto your gums. I am sure the dentist has already, but make sure the percentage is 10-15% the 20% can sometimes be too strong. You'll be fine and have a brilliant smile to match. =D

I just looked into this other day as far as over the counter based on consumer polls they say Crest White Strips Classic about 20.00 or Crest White Strips Premium around 27.00 I've only used the classic and if you use them consistently I think they work great. I wore braces when I was younger almost 4 years best day was getting them off. Anyways, hope that helps! :) P.S. Wear your retainer it sucks but you'll regret if you don't believe me I learned the hard way. lol

What kind of gel are you using and does it say that you can just apply it to the teeth without a tray. Some gels can cause irritation to your gums depending on the concentrations of the chemicals. I am guessing that you got this product at a local store instead of a concentration that a dentist would supply to you. You can apply it to your teeth and close your mouth. If you start to notice any irritation to your gums, then you would need to think about getting a professional tray or even using a mouth guard from a store. They have some that you can put in hot water so that it will mold to the shape of your teeth.

Teeth are not naturally as white as the advertising would have you believe. They are mostly bone white which is a an off color shade of white(slightly towards brown). Why some peoples teeth seem whiter than others may be more to do with the contrasting background (skin color being darker). Not saying your teeth are not porous. They will absorb stains such as tea, coffee, kool-aid and bleaching chemicals. So, if you abstain from the staining chemicals and have a healthy diet (low on sugar and decent amount of calcium it is about the best you can do for your teeth, besides regular brushing. They used to use baking soda and salt in the olden days instead of toothpaste and use that for cleaning. But it is a very slow process. Faster to get some teeth paint and paint them white.

I did bleaching and Zoom. Zoom took 1 hour and made my teeth sensitive but worked really well. A lot of dentists offer free Zoom to move to their practice. If not, you can find it for a few hundred bucks. Bleaching took about two weeks to see a huge difference but it has lasted for over 6 months now and I only did one touch-up since. Zoom lasts for years and years depending on coffee, wine and tomato sauce consumption.

Does it matter if I get whitening before or after getting veneers?

well i just started doing this for like only 4 days, and i've already seen the difference. it really works and its not bad for your teeth. all you do is buy a bottle of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, make sure its not 100% hydrogen peroxide. that is bad. but ya 3% hydrogen peroxide. brush your teeth first then take one cap full and swish it around just as you would mouth wash for 1 minute. and spit it out. but dont rinse it out yet. wait 1 more minute. then you can rinse. do this twice a day. it works great and its not bad for your teeth at all. and it works amazingly. and the bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide is only 52 cents at walmart. and it actually says that its used as a mouth wash on the back on the directions. and i have a little cup in my bathroom with just enough 3% hydrogen peroxide to cover the head of my tooth brush and when your done brushing just put it in there instead on your tooth brush holder or w/e. it cleans all germs and adds the whitening-nes to the tooth paste when you brush. hope i helped out!

You know when you brush your teeth and it turns into foam afterwards? Is it okay to swallow about half of it? The toothpaste I use is Crest with Extra Whitening and Tartar protection and it is a fluoride anticavity toothpaste. What are the side effects if it's bad? Or any symptoms?

Experts make this stuff with the knowledge and expects that people, especially children, are going to swallow a certain amount of it. If you read the back of the box or tube, it will usually say something like, "do not swallow more than you would from normal brushing." Just FYI- Symptoms of fluoride poisoning: body as a whole- excessive salivation abnormal taste (salty or soapy taste) tremors weakness convulsions respiratory - shallow respirations gastrointestinal- nausea vomiting diarrhea abdominal pain - nervous system shock Also, too much fluoride over time will cause white patches or other discoloration of your teeth. It can also cause enamal damage and pitting. Honestly, though, you don't have much to worry about from swallowing some foam from normal brushing. Most cases of fluoride poisoning occurs from fluoride found naturally in some drinking water- usually not the areas where fluoride is added. The fluoride issue is a hotly debated one right now and you are going to find convincing arguments for both sides. I would have to say to err on the side you are comfortable with. I guess I'd just have to ask if you are still alive and well (with healthy teeth) with your current brushing practices. If you are still unsure, talk to a dentist AND a physician. Chances are you will get conflicting advice, but at least it will most likely be accurate so you can make your own choices.

Don't swallow the baking soda either, even though it won't hurt you. To use the baking soda you would put your reg toothpaste on your brush and either dip the brush in the bsoda or sprinkle it on. I'm a dentist so I generally recommend getting them whitened professionally in a dentists office but I know how expensive it can be so here are some cheaper ways you can whiten at home. 1) Use whitening toothpastes after 4 times a day but brush LIGHTER so you don't ruin your gums. Using baking soda with this is also effective for some people. 2) Exposure of the teeth to light is a slow but effective way to whiten. However, I don't recommend this method to many people just because it's hard to achieve. It's pretty awkward to expose teeth to sun light 4 hours out of the day and teeth whitening products that shine UV light on your teeth are simply ineffective. 3) At-home teeth whitening products that work. I'm not talking about Crest Whitestrips or similar products found at walgreens or walmart. PLEASE don't use those. Almost every day I get calls from my clients complaining and asking for advice because the whitestrips destroyed their gums ... made their teeth extra sensitive .... or flat out didnt work .. etc. You're better off using products like the ones in the article I attached below. I generally like to use the sponge tool and desaturate the image. The Sponge tool is located with the dodge and burn tool (O Key). You're really just trying to get rid of the color and sometimes using other tools like the dodge will make the teeth too bight. Also you're adding light, so if you're working on an underexposed photo the dodge tool won't be an option probably. Anyways, here's a sample I made with the same pic from above just for comparison purposes. This is simply using the sponge tool on desaturate mode...nothing else. aqua fresh white trays worked for me they're like $40 dollars but work really great though you'll start to see results on day 2 and you could use listerine white rinse but whitening is also bad for your enamel but your just doing it once so it shouldn't really be much to worry about and you could actually use hydrogen peroxide like dip your toothbrush in the peroxide and then put baking soda on it like cover all the bristles with baking soda and brush your teeth with it and it should work but you might have to do that a few times though and try not to swallow any of the whitening stuff like whatever you use don't swallow it of course and if you like you can mix the peroxide with some mouthwash to make it taste better and rinse with peroxide too so that will clean your mouth. Sure! Try the Rembrandt bleaching trays kit. It's pretty awesome and easy to use , it doesn't irritate much either. You see, the kit contains two bleaching trays (upper and lower) you place them in fairly hot water then place the trays in your mouth, suck in really hard, and the trays mold to your teeth! Pretty freaking awesome, anyway after you got the mold then you place the bleaching gel in the trays oput um in your mouth and keep them in for a half hour I believe. The results are great and they lighten up for a couple days after too. I did this back in Oct 08 and still have great results! To keep up with it use Rembrandt Intense Stain toothpaste. The bleaching tray kit costs like $20-25 bucks and the toothpaste is $4. Good stuff that works ;D and i think you can get hydrogen peroxide from the grocery store just ask them where they have it Hope I Helped!! :)

hi, I am a registered dental nurse and have been practising for 18 years...so the best tooth whitening method in my opinion is the one prescribed by a dentist and used in the home enviroment such as opalescence.This consists of having impressions taken of top or bottom jaw or both depending on what you wish to be bleached,a custom made tray is then manufactured to fit your mouth.In this tray in the comfort of your own home you place the tooth whitening product and wear for a minimum of 3 hours,most people tend to wear them over night and dont find them too uncomfortable.A trip back to the dentist up to 2 wks after initial whitening is normally required to check progress against the starting shade.The final shade reached is purely up to the wearer but it is important to note that once you stop "bleaching" there will be a small "bounce back" of colour as the effect of the whitening gel is to slightly dehydrate the tooth substance therefore making them look whiter.Also it is important to know that white composite fillings do not bleach as do not crown bridge work etc!so if you have any of those they will look darker in comparison.If you find after a few months or in most cases I have dealt with a year the teeth start to darken again you simply top up with more gel as you already have the trays.This normally depends on your diet,red wine,coffee etc!The initial ste up costs range from £250 to £300.This would be my prefered method as the "in chair" whitening system is quick the colour tends not to be as stable and they send you home with gel anyway.Also you have more control in which shade you end up with.The light I believe has the effect of heating the gel and making the process faster.Again I would prefer the gel as this I would think is gentler on the tooth....hope this helps

First I would recommend that you consider having a dental cleaning and exam. If you have buildup (tartar, plaque, stain) the whitening process won't work that well. The crest whitestrips work well and are probably your lowest cost alternative. We sell them in my office ($75.00) and they are 3 times stronger than what are sold at drugstores and there are 3 weeks worth.
